I am the Marketer, Do as I Say!

 do-as-i-say

Yesterday the Australian Government announced a $42b package to stimulate the economy and they want it to pass through parliament by tomorrow.

Today the Opposition Leader announced in the media that they would block the package because they say the pressure to pass the package quickly does not allow for any discussion or scrutiny.

The Prime Minister is a little angry.

If you forget about the politics, the news reports remind me that sometimes as marketers we do not involve all the relevant people when we make major decisions regarding our products or services. This can mean that we can miss the opportunity to maximise the results or come up with an even better outcome.

You can’t please everyone and no one has the perfect solution all the time. However, it is worthwhile to think of the consequences of not stopping for a second and involving others in key marketing decisions.

Some of the things I have learnt over the years in marketing to ensure a successful launch of a product or marketing campaign are:

  • Involve your key customers continually and listen to their feedback
  • Be organised so you do not put the pressure on other departments or business partners to do their part in a rush
  • Get input and agreement on the goals to be achieved
  • Listen carefully to suggestions especially from someone with better knowledge and experience regarding an issue
  • Don’t be scared of constructive criticism
  • If necessary conduct a test market or simple research early on in the development
  • Admit your mistakes early

Over to you, what tips do you have to ensure the cooperation of others for your marketing success?
